Saferon

Saferon (Iron Dextran injection) is a complex of ferric hydroxide and Dextran for intramuscular use.

Indications
Saferon used to treat Acute Iron deficiency
and Iron-deficiency anemia when oral Iron
medications can not be applied.

Contraindications
Severe liver damage or acute kidney infection.
History of hypersensitivity to the preparation.

Precautions :
Saferon should be given with caution to patients with history of allergic disorders, Asthma or
Rheumatoid arthritis.
Oral Iron salt must be stopped before starting
parenteral Iron.
The drug tolerance must be tested on the patient before applying the full therapeutic dose;
emergency precautionary measures should be available during drug administration considering any allergic reactions.
Patients should be monitored for at least one hour after the test dose was applied; if no adverse
reactions were seen then the remaining dose can be given.
Do not mix Saferon injection with other
medications nor with parenteral nutrition
solutions for intravenous infusion.
Saferon is better to be avoided during pregnancy if possible; traces of unmetabolized Iron Dextran can be excreted in human milk.
Saferon is not recommended for infants under 4 months of age.

Evidence of the therapeutic response can
be seen in few days of using Saferon.
